Last spring I did a photoshoot with an actor friend of mine, Kendra Anderson. It was my first photoshoot and I didn’t know much of what I was doing really. But I still managed to get some awesome shots.
This was the best shot of day-and still one of my favorite photos.
I grabbed these shots at the Creative Mix convention I attended a few weeks back. In the exhibition hall of the convention there was a backdrop and lights set up for anyone to use. David Aiken, one the speakers at the convention, was an enthusiastic and animated model to say the least.
The lighting was fantastic and it revived my desire to go all out and buy a lighting system and backdrop to take my photography to the next level-whenever I can afford it that is.
Awhile back I headed to Gastown to do a photoshoot with Samantha Winfield. I had a general idea of what I wanted to achieve with the shoot and I had a few locations which I wanted to check out.
The first location was a back alley. I know I know, these alleyways have been done to death. But there’s good reason for it. They’re full of character and each one has it’s own unique features. The alley I chose had some cool brick walls and metal bars over the windows which made for some nice angles. We shot in mid-afternoon and caught the sun just before it ducked behind the buildings-making some great shadows in the windows but creating a challenge in lighting Sam (we used a reflector).
The second location, the doorway of a restaurant, was fantastic as well. The windows especially made for some beautiful reflections of the trees behind me. Sam did an great job posing in front of them, using her arms to work with the lines of the door. The biggest trick here was not catching myself or cars in the window’s reflection.
The last location was the one I had planned on heading to. A few weeks prior I worked on the set of a Mini Series that was filming at a loft in Chinatown. While all the filming took place inside the loft I noticed the back of the building would make the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot. The blue wooden frame was full of character and created interesting shadows that, in my photos, did not dissapoint. Also, the side of the building made for another good brick backdrop. Being the area that it was, I found a needle stuck inside the broken cement of the brick wall. If you look really closely you can see it in the last photos.
A few weeks ago I shot the set stills for Adaline’s first music video. The music video was shot by John Poliquin and since I have already posted a selection of photos from the day HERE, Im opting instead to post a few “behind the scenes” photos of the crew making the video happen. But first check out her awesome video!
The featured image I chose today is of three models posing in front of the media wall after Broken Ghost’s runway show. The models are Kaitlin Sullivan (right), Madison Hamilton (left), and unfortunately I don’t know the girls name on the far left but if anyone knows her please let me know.
During Broken Doll’s show I went on a “skewed” composition kick. Basically I played around with extreme angles for awhile. Check em and let me know what you think!
It’s official, Vancouver Fashion Week has taken over my blog!
Today’s photos are from Paul Hardy’s runway show at VFW last saturday night. Paul’s show was an interesting challenge for us photographers. Instead of the models pausing at the end of the runway as usual, giving us a chance to snap some shots of them posing, they turned right around and walked away, making shooting good photos difficult. I could sense the other photographers frustration at this unforseen change in plan. However, I kind of enjoyed the change of pace.
As a photographer I find runway photos got boring pretty quick. Sure the designs and models change constantly, as well as the hair and makeup, but the photography formula basically stays the same: take the standard photos of the model approaching, the poses, and the exit. Not much room for creativity. So I looked for every opportunity to break from the norm and I found Paul Hardy’s show a good opportunity to experiment with photo composition.
When I was at the Opening Gala for Vancouver Fashion Week I had a chance to talk to some of the designers of the show. One of them handed me a business card printed on sheet metal. The clothing label read “Ginger Martini.” I commented on her interesting card and asked what her name was. She replied, “Ginger Martini.” I smiled and asked what he real name was. Again she said, “Ginger Martini.”
I chose these photos to show some of the peices from her line because, like the “cape” or the golden fleece, the photos are unconventional-at least for runway photos.
Come back for more “conventional” runway photos of Ginger Martini’s line in the near future.
Saturday November 7th at Vancouver Fashion Week Porscia unveiled her new 2010 spring/summer collection. The show was a hit with attendees and Porscia’s line quickly grabbed the attention of upscale buyer Holt Renfrew. As a media attendee I photographed most of the shows throughout the week and I have to say Porscia’s show was among the most impressive.
Look for these photos and more at Porscia’s website (designed by me) PORSCIA.COM.
Last night’s Vancouver Fashion Week show, held at Colin Campbell, showed designs from local and international designers. Although Im not a fashionista myself I liked the designs by Broken Doll and Broken Ghost Couture. Here are some photos.
Yesterday evening I attended Vancouver Fashion Week’s opening Gala at the Terminal City Club. The event was packed with gorgeous models, designers, and media. I’ll be at most of the shows throughout the week so check back here regularly for more!
Pictured: 3 models from the “Hair and Makeup” contest. I think you can guess my pic for winner.
